Shipping policy

Pakistan has been actively updating its shipping policies to enhance its role in regional and global trade. In 2020, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs introduced a revised shipping policy, aiming to reduce the annual freight charges of approximately USD 5 billion incurred for foreign trade. This policy offered incentives such as exemptions from customs duty, income tax, and sales tax for vessels reegistered in Pakistan until 2030, and prioritized berthing rights at ports for Pakistani-flagged carriers.

In 2024, efforts continued with a workshop focused on refurbishing Pakistan's shipping policy, indicating ongoing commitment to modernizing the maritime sector. Additionally, Pakistan signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Denmark to attract investment and development in the maritime industry.

Furthermore, in November 2024, Pakistan announced the drafting of a transshipment policy to bolster its position in international trade. This policy aims to provide clear guidelines and incentives for transshipment activities, streamline operations at Pakistani ports, and stimulate economic growth and employment opportunities.
